Calorie Count
Ordinarily finding ourselves following in our big cousin’s footsteps, I hope for once that we don’t follow America’s lead.
Having already introduced state laws in major states such as New York and Canada, America are now looking to nationalise the obligation to display calorie content on menus.
Whilst the initiative behind the campaign, namely to tackle obesity levels, cannot be criticised, Insight are of the opinion that British restaurants should steer well clear of mimicking the scheme. It is not in dispute that we are rapidly becoming a more health conscious society, but it should not rule every aspect of our lives. We often choose to eat out as a treat and being made aware of our calorie consumption can make us feel guilty, turning something which is supposed to be a pleasure into an ungratifying affair.
The best way to keep up with social trend is to instead provide healthier alternatives. This provides people with the option to ‘be good’ as opposed to making meals sinful.
Yes, jump onto the ‘health kick’ bandwagon, but do it by making people feel good about being good and not bad about bein bad.
